When I told people I was going to photograph peak fall color in California, most of them looked at me like I had four heads. Evidently, most Southern Californians don't venture out into the mountains much in the fall. There are actually many places within an easy drive of Southern California where you can find vibrant fall colors every year, and some of them in Southern California itself!
Deep in the mountains of California's Eastern Sierra near the tiny little mountain community of Aspendell lie valleys chocked to the gills with Aspens, Oaks, and Cottonwoods bursting to life in shades of neon orange, yellow, and red.
In this wet mountain marsh, I photographed this beautiful little stand of Quaking Aspen trees framed by a sea of golden grasses and cradled by a canyon of silver rock. To maximize detail throughout all areas of the image, I utilized a focus stacked set of images to obtain 100% depth of field throughout all areas, which means that no matter how big you blow this image up, or how far you zoom in, you just see more and more detail in those beautiful yellow Aspen leaves and golden blades of grass. It's a place I'll remember for a long time, and one I'd love to return to year after year.
