Barrier 8x10" Silver Gelatin Darkroom Contact Print

from 75.00

This is a Silver Gelatin Contact print of “Barrier”, made in my darkroom using a fully analog process from the original 8x10” negative. I made the print on Ilford Multigrade IV RC Deluxe Gloss darkroom paper with an Ilford Multigrade #5 contrast filter. No digital tools were used to create this image. It is an entirely analog piece of art, crafted from silver and light.

I printed this image using an Ilford Multigrade contrast #5 filter. The 5 definitely brought out the contrast of the scene as I envisioned and experienced it, and once again, I was able to create a darkroom print which met or exceeded what I was able to accomplish using the digital hybrid process with a scan. This was a very easy negative to print, as with the correct contrast filter, it required only very minimal burning to bring out some additional detail in the top corner of the image, and came out exactly as I wanted it to. I’m very pleased with the result!

This print is the same size as the original 8x10-inch film negative and was made by pressing it firmly against light-sensitive paper with a sheet of glass and exposing the pair to light and then washing the print in a series of chemical and water baths in the dark to bring out the image in the paper. As the paper becomes soaked in the development chemical solution, the image slowly and almost magically materializes in the paper over a period of about 20-30 seconds. Note that each contact print is unique, and must be created by hand by the artist in the darkroom using contact with the original negative. Because of this organic hand-crafted process, each print will have unique imperfections and differences from other prints of the same negative. This is normal and is part of the unique physical nature of these prints. The large format contact printing process has been called "the crown jewel of photography."

The original exposure was made using The Intrepid Camera Co. 8x10 prototype and Fujinon C 300mm ƒ/8.5 lens on Ilford Delta 100 film with a red lens filter for added contrast.

Print will be signed by the artist if desired, on front or back upon request, and shipped flat to anywhere in the world (please select the international shipping option at checkout).
